1999 Carolina Cup

Knight Air captured the Silver Medal in the 1999 Carolina Cup. There were 10 men’s teams in the tournament broken down into two groups of five. Our results in the four group round-robin games were as follows:

Knight Air – 19 Atlanta – 10
Knight Air – 19 Carolina – 11
Knight Air – 25 Atlanta-Warriors – 12
Knight Air – 21 West Point-Black – 15

Our play during the round-robin games was good but not always consistent which is needed at the National Championships. Having gone undefeated in group play, we advanced to the semi-finals as the top seed in our bracket. We met West Point-Gold in the crossover – defeating them 28-12.

In the Championship Game, we met Garden City from Long Island, NY. They have been the National Champions for most of the Nationals in the 1990’s – a seasoned & veteran team. We beat Garden City last year at the ’98 USA National Championships, 19-18, in an extremely close game.

This year proved to be another very close game. At half time the score was tied 11-11. In the second half their experience prevailed outscoring us 14-11 and winning the Gold Medal 25-22. We played very well considering that they practice frequently and this was Knight Air’s first set of games since CISM 98 and we have had no practice in between.

Overall, the team played very well. It was nice to get together prior to Nationals and this experience should help our performance this year as we defend our title.
